ReplyDeleteCitrus Pulled Pork Tacos
1. The photographer here wanted to go for a very clean, elegant look, without any harsh shadows to make the image ugly. In order to capture the entire dish, they shot from above while using a soft box from the bottom left to gently light the food, and to balance it, they either used another weaker soft box for the right side, or a bounce flash off the ceiling for fill. He also set the aperture very low as to just keep the dish in focus and leave the rest of the photo slightly out of focus. This was another reason to shoot from above, because if he shot from the side, or slightly above, the dish would have to have a much larger aperture because if extended farther away, say 6 inches from the camera rather than the inch or two when shot from above. The result is a well-lit, colorful image, that accentuates the slightly burnt tortilla, and bits of carrot and jalapenos, and the pulled pork, peeking from underneath.
2. The intended audience for this image is people who enjoy food, and would like to see everything in the dish, so they have an idea on how to make it. Although the photo makes the food look high class, almost anyone can make this dish, and so that opens up the audience to parents, and busy college students alike who want to see some delicious food, and like to know that they can recreate that dish, if not the photo.
3. The emphasis of the photo is the dish of course. In particular, the colors from the carrots and lime and jalapeno kept a very clean look against the white of the tortilla and helped to balance out the pink of the meat and light green of the cabbage. The simple metal platter helps to keep the focus on the food instead of the designs that could have been on the dish. The effect is a clean image that makes the food look almost too good to eat.
4. The Argument being made here is; if you eat meat, you should eat this because its super good and you don’t want to miss out! For me personally it was, you should try and photograph something like this and get a similar effect because it is so clean!!

1. The photographer decided to post a meal that is "the perfect Mother's Day bonding experience." He/she additionally added a rose and the ubiquitous sandwich to come with the recipe to symbolize the love for Mother's day. The photograph was shot at a plain table, showing the rural common environment that the photographer lives in.
2. The intended audience for this appetizer are families and to an extent, cooks and chefs. The caption states that this dish is the "the perfect Mother's Day bonding experience", so it is directed at mothers, who are also part of family. Furthermore, there are steps that show how the meal is made, so this can be appealing to cooks and chefs.
3. The photographer chose to focus on a simple egg dish and bread on a plain table. This can signify the treat for families because they often live in regular and normal houses. It also references the "The 40-second egg", showing that an egg like this can be made almost anywhere.
4. The dish wants to show that not all meals take too long to efficiently create. Due to its simple nature, this dish makes an argument that not all egg recipes are considered "fats" or "unhealthy". This argument also stands that it "appeals" to the children and mothers, which is the main purpose for this dish.
Though often viewed as simplistic and mundane, the photographer’s choices enable him/her to embody the opulence of eggs. Whether placing the eggs partially beneath a piece of toast, or insuring that the table top was clearly visible in the photo, a homey atmosphere is most clearly conveyed. Above all else however, it is the author’s choice to add to the picture, a small amount of chives (or some other form of green garnish) to bring out the true color of the eggs that enhances the dish’s presentation.
ReplyDeleteThe intended audience for this dish is urban individuals, most likely of a hipster persuasion. Disregarding the facts that the dish was created by a relatively young, white, San Francisco based chef in an attempt to simplify cooking eggs; there is much about the dish that hints at the recipe’s intended audience. Above all else, the fact that dish seeks to reinvent the way people cook eggs (which is already extremely simple and quick), and intends to do so in a way that is more efficient yet produces more dirty dishes and no taste difference is testament to the fact the intended audience is hipsters.
The eggs and toast are the two main places of emphasis in the photo. The emphasis placed on these items of food stuffs enables the photo to more effectively capture their essence, as well as convey the profound importance of the scrambled poached eggs, as a masterpiece of culinary insight. This desired emphasis is attained.
The underlying message of this dish is that even a dish often thought of as so basic, simple and with no need for further perfection, has room for improvement. In effect, even the simple task of cooking an egg can be improved upon, and altered as to sound more unique and original. The message of this dish is, in a sense, the message of hipster culture.

1. The photographer made the decision to place the recipe [soup] in a bowl, with only a portion of the bowl actually shown in the image. In addition, the picture is taken straight down as opposed to a slightly angled picture as seen with some other recipes. Unlike most other recipes displayed on the site, the eating utensil used to consume the recipe is shown in the dish.
2. Because the recipe is not as visually attractive as other recipes, it is not intended for those seeking a dish to serve to guests [i.e. at parties, &c.]. Instead, this is a recipe for those wishing to serve themselves an old-fashioned home-cooked meal, possibly as a type of “comfort food”. The recipe also states that it is meant to feed four people, which indicates that it is optimized for serving just the family.
3. The photographer chose to include a spoon placed inside the dish. This gives viewers a welcoming effect on the dish due to the fact that the image is ready to eat as is, as opposed to images of other recipes that may look appetizing but lack the proper utensils to eat with. It gives off the feeling that one can just reach into the image and take a spoon of the recipe.
4. The photographer is making the argument that viewers should consider this recipe as the dish is homely and traditional. As the title of the recipe also suggests, this recipe is the perfect dish to create if feeling cold.
TRIPLE CHOCOLATE ESPRESSO COOKIES
ReplyDelete1. The author made the decision to only show one full cookie, and to cut off the other ones. The cracks in the cookie are symbolic of the cracks in the soul of the photographer. This is very meta.
2. The audience for these cookies are busy soccer moms who want to impress their boring faux intellectual friends with this seemingly sophisticated recipe. It's expresso, so they can claim to be cultured. It's just a cookie.
3. The photographer chose to focus on the little crevices and tiny details of the cookies. They are focused well, and it is easy to see how good the cookies must taste.
4. In the subtext, the author discusses her "Soviet-era" local store, and her experiences with it. She makes the argument is that these are basic cookies that are easy to make but taste very good. They might not be very healthy, but they can be a rare treat.

1. The photographer presented the food in a more unique way. The picture is of the macaroon with a bite taken out of it to show the inside filling. On the top right corner, there is matcha powder sprinkled on the counter to show to flavor of the cream filling. Also, a person's fingers are holding the half bitten macaroon, which emphasizes it's small size.
2. The intended audience for this dish are people who have a sweet tooth and people who wouldn't mind trying different things. I can tell because not many people have tried matcha, which is actually green tea powder. Nor have people tried macaroons, which have recently became very popular. Also, it might be seen as a strange recipe to some because the matcha is not usually paired in with chocolate.
3. The photographer chose to emphasis the inside filling of the macaroon. The desired affect
of taking a picture of the macaroon with a bite taken out of it is to make the audience want to also take a bite out of it. Seeing the delicious looking cream filling makes the audience want to taste it even more. Also, the author chose to emphasize the color of the macaroon and its filling. The brown from the outside of the macaroon and the light green color of the matcha goes really well together, which makes the macroon look even more delicious.

1. The photographer wanted to give an image that showed many possibilities. The image just shows a whole chicken already cooked. There is nothing on the chicken, just the chicken itself. This gives off the impression that there are many ways you can use the chicken to make a meal and make it last throughout the week.
2. The intended audience would be people with jobs and/or families. You can tell because many people who have a job and/or a family are usually too busy to cook for themselves and their family. The image would show how they can just use one thing to prepare meals ahead of time to save time later.
3. The photographer chose to emphasize the chicken itself. The photographer took a picture using a dark background so that the image of the cooked chicken can be emphasized. The effect is so that the viewer sees it right away and is not distracted by anything in the background.
4. There are many possibilities in just using one thing. In this case, it would be the chicken. One can make meals for up to a week through using just one whole chicken.

ReplyDelete1. In doing this photo the photographer decided to make the chicken the concentrated aspect of the photo. They wanted to show, in closer detail, the seasonings that were used and also the juiciness of the chicken. The photographer, since chicken was one of the first words of title followed then with mushroom and artichokes, decided to make chicken the focal aspect of the picture as a way to clearly show the obvious thing people will look for.
2. The intended audience is for people who eat mushrooms and artichokes and especially chicken. But also it is for those who like to have a big portion of chicken to eat. This is shown because the vegetables are not the main focus of the photo, the chicken is. And also there is little, in comparison to the chicken, vegetables to get.
3. What is emphasized is the chicken. The chicken is very big and overpowering in the photograph it leaves all the vegetables almost invisible in the photo. This can affect the person who chooses because if someone wanted more vegetables and mushrooms they would be detracted from the dish. ReplyDeleteOLIVE OIL PANCAKES WITH DARK CHOCOLATE AND SEA SALT
1. The photographer chose to go for a bit of a disheveled look. There are pieces of dark chocolate and sea salt randomly scattered around the plate, and syrup is oozing out from underneath the pancake. To top it off, the pancake is somewhat irregularly shaped, and isn’t even placed in the center of the plate. Yet it’s easy to tell that the entropic nature of the picture was intentional, because there is still a very pleasant ‘feel’ to it.
2. This dish was probably targeting people who are very casual and informal about their meals. The photographer is most likely appealing to the Average Joe, who would find more of a personal connection to the dish because of the way it’s presented. This is due to the messy nature of the photograph; in reality, when the average person makes pancakes, they aren’t perfectly circular, and most of us do set up our plates rather untidily. This photograph thus appeals to the general populace.
3. I think the most emphasis was placed on the dark chocolate. In the first picture, my attention was drawn to the conspicuous pieces of dark chocolate scattered around, and in the second picture, the focus is obviously on the gooey chocolate inside the pancakes. This is an effective emphasis, because it attracts people who want more than just a regular pancake, people with a sweet tooth.
4. The main argument being made here is that this is a simple, very relaxed dish that anyone can find a connection to. Beyond this universality, it also specifically tailors to those who follow that same simple, relaxed feeling in their own meals, like me. I’m the type of person who doesn’t care too much about the presentation of my meals, so long as they taste great, and this dish fits my needs quite well.

1)The photography chose to do many things when presenting this photo. First and utmost, the photographer chose to present the subject, aka these delicious looking cookies, on a natural wood table in a clean, simple dish. Also, the photography chose to stack the cookies in a not-so-natural manner. Most of all, he chose to have a smaller aperture, which causes the background of the cookies to be blurred out, and the cookies to be perfectly in focus.
2)The intended audience for this picture is for people who want some food porn in their life, or if they have a sweet tooth. People with a sweet tooth are wired up to have deep urges for any picture that looks delicious which makes them hungry…. Yes. If the cookies weren’t the only things in focus, then people wouldn’t feel as hungry. They would be too busy looking at the background and bowl.
3)The author chose to put the most emphasis onto the cookies, which I love. It made me hungry so I had to walk away from my computer for a few minutes to think about food. The desired effect of the photographer putting emphasis on the cookies was to make the viewer think about making them. To make the viewer want to eat them with milk and enjoy the sweetness of what is… the cookies.
4)The subtext of this photo says that the cookies won an award on food52.com. Also, it says that if you want some cookies for yourself, don’t leave on your kitchen table since the baby will eat them. The argument being made in those two lines alone are that these cookies must be delicious. That they are so good that you have to make them and taste the award winning chocolate infused with south Asian coffee espresso with a hint of heavenly goodness. I am hungry now.

1. Of course the photographer wants to highlight the more appealing parts of the ice cream bars. Keeping this in mind, s/he makes sure to keep the ice cream bar the center of attention by creating a somewhat boring background. Because the background has softer colors, it contrasts with the harshness of the colors of the ice cream bar. Otherwise, the bar is cut in half in order to show that there is more in it than we can actually see by just looking at the outside chocolate shell.
2. The intended audience is most likely those who enjoy sweets or who enjoy making desserts. The simplicity of the dessert is shown in the picture, so it would appeal to those who also crave sweetness but don't want to do a lot of work to get it, as well. Since it's not as elaborate a dish as some desserts are shown to be, it most likely targets those who crave simple ways to curb their urge to eat sweet things.
3. I think the emphasis was placed on the way the ice cream bar is a bunch of things unified into one through the chocolate shell. The lighting creates a shadow on half of the inside of the bar, and on the other half, it's positioned in a way where it's kind of hard to see. The chocolate shell is the first thing that anyone looking at it would see and the photographer was probably keeping in mind that the outside is what the customer or whoever is looking at, not the inside. Although the photographer includes a glimpse of what is inside as to not keep people wondering what is in it, most of the emphasis is on the chocolate.
4. The main argument of this dessert is that it's simple and easy for anyone to get a hold of. If you crave something sweet, this is the perfect thing to grab because it's sweet, includes many different forms of sweetness, and is easy to make. And because it can be crumbly (there are pieces of the cookies broken off of the bar as a whole), it is perfect for any occasion as long as you're allowed to be messy :P
